Stavanger is divided into 7 boroughs. These are: Eiganes/Våland, Hillevåg, Hinna, Hundvåg, Madla, Storhaug, and Tasta.
Stavanger-Web is situated at Madla, near Hafrsfjord where the Viking King, Harald Hårfagre (fair-headed Harald), united Norway into one kingdom. The monument (The Swords in Stone) is placed at Hafrsfjord in memory of the struggle that took place in the year 872. Until 1963 Madla was its own municipality with approximately 6000 inhabitants. Nearly 20 000 people live there now. Madla contains both residential areas and farms, beaches, lakes and woodland. The origin of the name Madla is unknown. Going into the 13 century the area was called "Mollum" and then "Mallar" or "Malla". In the beginning of the 1600's the name was spelled "Malde". There is proof of people living at Madla earlier than 1800 BC.
